PLEASE READ BEFORE CONTRIBUTING TO THE WEBSITE

Explore Your Genealogy is a unique website that provides free access and is easy to navigate. It covers all aspects of tracing your family tree from the very first steps to more complex issues. Content will be continually added and will remain topical, so please revisit regularly to see what is new. Our objective is to make Explore Your Genealogy the one-stop place for information about family history.  Please note, the website is NOT a wiki or a blog!

Submitting a contribution

When submitting a contribution, it is important that you follow the How to Contribute instructions under Contribute from the website's main menu.

We invite contributions from any family and local historians which follow the guidelines below.

Contributions can be in different forms.

  • Articles
  • Research Guides for using specific genealogical records
  • Stories and experiences from your family history that describe the use of particular sets of documents
  • Tips on resolving research challenges and breaking down brick walls
  • Unusual or niche archive discoveries
  • Projects (family and local history societies, archives etc) descriptions, how to access etc.

You do not have to be a member of a family history society to contribute but if you are, contributions can be attributed to one society or U3A group to which you belong, to specific archives or to those offering professional research services/facilities PROVIDED a bona fide website URL is included in the contribute now form. The inclusion of a URL is optional.

If your contribution is specific to a location, we will use our best endeavours to attribute the article to the family history society covering that place. Where a URL is included, there will be an automatic link in the acknowledgement direct to the nominated website at the end of the article.

When providing the URL for your website, please DO NOT include http://  Commence the link only with www.

The process after submitting a contribution

Please follow the guidelines and instructions. Only use the set template components currently available. Images used within articles may be resized to fit the design templates and style. When using images, we encourage you to complete the information requested regarding description and reference of the document, and copyright attribution.

Once you have drafted an article, please remember to Save as a draft and then Preview your contribution from the drop-down menu. You will receive an email link each time you save so that clicking on the link in the email will return you to your contribution. Depending upon your screen configuration and/or the device you are using, you may see the contribution in preview-mode slightly differently from how it will appear once uploaded on the website.

All articles once submitted will be subject to review and be proofread by the Federation before publishing/uploading. It will help if your make sure your content is accuarte. Content will not be altered without consultation except for grammatical purposes.

The Federation reserves the right to refuse to publish, or require amendment to, submitted articles where they do not meet the website objectives. In undertaking the review, we are also looking to avoid duplication of topics and subjects.
